Surrey, British Columbia is a great city and is growing fast! Renting tips & advice

Make Sure You Can Afford The Cost Of Rent And All Utilities

You need to make sure your monthly rent is an amount you can afford and that you’ve properly accounted for all the additional items like utilities and parking too.  At the absolute most, your rent should be no more than 50% of your after-tax net income.  Keeping at least half of your take-home pay will allow you to pay for everyday items such as groceries and everyday household items without overextending yourself. Know your rental budget and adhere to it when considering which place is best for you.  Some units for rent will pay for utilities such as garbage and water, try to rent one of those places to save money. 

View Places At Night As Well As On Weekends

To get the most complete understanding of what living and renting in this city is like, you are going to need to visit the property after hours, on weekends and even at night.  You will get a great feel of what the complex is really like during these times. Generally, when you visit a space during the day, there aren't a lot of people around and you may not get a true feel for what the location is really like. You do not want any surprises once you move in, so it is always best to look at the community in every way you can beforehand committing to a lease agreement and moving in.  Places to rent should be seen by your friends or family so they can give you a second opinion on the rental.

Have All Of Your Moving Information Ready

You want to have everything that you need ready when you are preparing to find a home. When you go to see a place, you should have your paperwork completed and that includes a copy of the rental application as well as a list of references, a recent credit report and a security clearance as well.  When you are going to sign your lease, make sure you have prior rental history, vehicular information, pay stubs and all other important information that you may need.  You can call ahead to the apartment leasing office to learn what materials are required and we encourage all prospective tenants to make that call.
