St. Paul has matured a lot in the last 10 years, becoming flush with young, professionals looking for apartments and lingering long enough to start their families there. One thing remains, that you don't have to head to the suburbs for peace and quiet because St. Paul is a peaceful place already with a sparse smattering of entertainment centers and hot spots.

Cost of living

Monthly rent in Lowertown is generally considered affordable, while the same amount of room in the suburbs could go for even less.  Like most cities, cheap apartments can be had if you move further away from the conveniences and culture of the downtown area, but our apartment guide should help you find the cost-of-living balance you are looking for in St. Paul.  Utilities for one month will run you a couple hundred dollars a month and those of you in need of parking should budget for an extra hundred dollars just to be safe.  With some forethought and good budgeting, you can make a wonderful life in St. Paul for a reasonable price.

Lowertown is where you will find most of the exciting things, like the two annual art crawls, live music festivals and craft breweries. More apartment rental tips for life in a St. Paul, MN

  1. Register your car and get a Minnesota driver's license, within 60 days of your move, and don't forget to update your insurance.
  2. Buy your winter gear early and get used to a life spent wrapping and unwrapping yourself to battle the winter temperatures - better yet, get warm by getting involved in winter sport.
  3. Know what a "snow emergency" is: a 20-hour period where parking restrictions are applied so the snow plows can operate as quickly and efficiently as possible. Keep off the roads!
  4. Qwest and Comcast are your new Internet service providers (if you didn't use them already).
  5. The city of St. Paul doesn't haul trash, so you will need to get in touch with one of the licensed garbage contractors to arrange for yours to be picked up unless your new apartment has arrangements already (and most do).
