Renting tips & advice

From Condos to Townhomes: Durham's Housing

As mentioned above, Durham has a lot of newer constructions for rent, specifically lofts and condos. These are mostly located in the city center and are reasonably priced for a new rental. If you don't like the open air of a loft apartment, there's plenty of more traditional apartments for rent as well. These are often in newer buildings, too. Studio apartments are available for rent under the national average, so you can score a deal here!

If you want a home with a yard, you can get that in Durham too. Townhomes for rent are available in Durham as well, but you'll have to live further outside the city center. Use an apartment finder to research neighborhoods, as not all are safe in Durham. A great neighborhood with this type of rental is North Durham, so begin your search there.

Avoid Renting in August and September

Durham is home to Duke University and North Carolina Central University. Thus, many people are looking for rentals at the beginning of the school year. This can mean apartments for rent are more scarce, and often more expensive. Wait until May-- when most students are clearing out-- to crack open that apartment guide. That's when you'll find the best prices.

Be Prepared

If you must move during a popular time, be ready to rent. Have references and a security deposit ready. Apartments move quickly during collegiate moves, so you must act fast. Also, keep your eyes peeled for cheap apartments in college neighborhoods-- you'll likely be surrounded by undergraduate students and it may not be the quietest neighborhood.
