Get to Know the City

Getting around a new city or state can be difficult without understanding its transit system. Take time to locate and get directions to the main sources of transportation in the area. If driving, get a local map, take a day or two and visit the important facilities. In the event of an emergency, find out where the local hospitals are located and do the same for both the dentist and the clinic. Search for nearby parks, schools, colleges and universities. Be sure to find out where the airport, train station and transit lines are located and whether they are within walking distance from your apartment. Another fact to consider is the weather as some parts of the state are known to be especially dry which can be problematic for those with respiratory problems.  

Update Your Personal Information

Visit your local post office and have the mail from your previous address forwarded to your new apartment.  It is best to begin forwarding your mail the moment you sign your new lease.  If you wait until the last day of your lease or make the change after you’ve already moved, you run the risk of not receiving mail that was just recently issued.  Be sure to visit the voter's registration office and update all your voter information and apply for a new driver's license within 30 days of arriving at your new address.  While the state of Oregon charges no sales tax, be sure to visit or contact the IRS and find out what their guidelines or requirements are for operating a business, if applicable, in the area just to be safe.
